Even God will be angry if we build a Cathedral with $450m – Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for 2024, has expressed disapproval of the $450 million that was set aside for the National Cathedral project while issues in the education sector go unresolved, claiming that it will not be approved by God.

The former president makes the case that people who share the project's goal should provide funding since it is believed to be a personal pledge made by President Nana Akufo-Addo to God.

As part of the Upper West Region's "Building Ghana Tour," he spoke at a meeting with religious leaders in Wa.
"The President stated that he promised God he would build a cathedral in his honor if he won the election. Therefore, it is his personal commitment, and in order to create it, he needs to assemble those who share his convictions.

Additionally, we were informed that the Cathedral would not be built with public cash," he added.

The government's reliance on public funding to finance the project was also criticized by the former President.

But in the end, we discovered that the Finance Minister was disclosing public taxes. "We cannot build a cathedral for Christians only using public funds, including funds from members of other denominations," he continued.

In addition, he said, "You have to ask yourself, is it justified in this day and age when children don't have desks in schools when children don't have textbooks?

So far, 58 million dollars of public funds have been spent just to dig a deep hole."

The former president feels that, given the government's investment on consulting services and other project-related costs, it would have been more prudent to use the monies designated for the cathedral project to support education.

He said, "Even God will be angry with us because we haven't given textbooks to basic schools for the past five years despite releasing a new curriculum because we say there isn't enough money and you say we should use 450 million dollars to build a cathedral."
