Ghana Armed Forces responds to attack on Tema Naval Base

The Ghana Armed Forces responded quickly to an unexpected incident that occurred at the Tema Naval Base in Ghana while a festival was in progress.

The incident happened on Friday, April 12, 2024, in the evening.

A news release from the Department of Public Relations at the General Headquarters, Burma Camp, Accra, states that festival attendees allegedly set upon a car that belonged to the Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy.

The attack caused three Naval men to be injured in addition to causing severe damage to the vehicle.

The wounded were swiftly taken to the Tema Naval Base Medical Center for emergency care in the interim.

Three people who were thought to be involved in the incident were taken into custody by Naval troops in response to the rapidly worsening circumstances.

After that, the Tema Newtown District Police was tasked with looking into these people more.

But the assault didn't stop there.

Following the festival, a crowd that was allegedly associated with the attendees of the event attacked the Tema Naval Base, throwing stones and other objects in an effort to free the detained suspects.

The Ghana Armed Forces were compelled by this to respond decisively in order to protect the Base and its sensitive installations.

In an attempt to dissuade the attackers, warning shots were fired, but sadly, two individuals were declared dead when they arrived at the Tema General Hospital, according to the statement.

After these upsetting incidents, on Saturday, April 13, 2024, more attacks were launched against the Tema Naval Base and the Naval Barracks at Tema Newtown (Biekro Barracks). As a result, there was increased tension in the neighborhood and property was damaged.

In an effort to defuse tensions, the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces have conducted exhaustive investigations to determine the facts behind the assaults and apprehend those responsible.

The statement also stated that the results of these inquiries will eventually be made available to the public.

However, the Ghana Armed Forces expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and emphasized the significance of preserving peace and stability in the region in a statement signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General, Public Relations.

In order to protect public safety and security, he also sent a strong warning to any prospective assailants, announcing that any additional assaults on military people or sites would be faced with the necessary countermeasures.
